It wouldn't be summer in the city without Pride and it wouldn't be Pride without Dykes on Bikes roaring down Valencia Street, followed by thousands of women of all shapes and sizes (some of them clothed, all of them radiating with energy). This is an experience that should not be missed; the electricity in the air, the over all good-feelings and acceptance of everyone, no matter how different. And the volume of people is overwhelming - stand at the corner of 16th and Valencia and look South, you’ll see nothing but women for blocks! If you want outstanding customer service, drop by the store during the parade; you'll have the dressing rooms to yourself and we'll do all we can to fit you up. But chances are you'll want to go outside and smile and wave, and be happy that this special place called San Francisco is what we call home.

While you're in the city consider checking out the Frameline LGBT Film Festival which will be showing at venues throughout the city. While we're on the subject of great films, did you know that Therapy has an alumnus who is now a filmmaker? People who have worked at Therapy have gone on to do some amazing things and Hima B. is certainly no exception. She's currently running a kick-starter campaign to finish a film she's been working on entitled, License to Pimp; click here to read more about Hima's project or about Hima herself . We're proud to have worked with Hima but we are even more proud of the work that she has accomplished. That bus monitor lady has more than enough to retire on, go ahead and give Hima a hand! She'll make us all a great movie and raise awareness about working conditions for women in all types of jobs.

Isn’t it amazing how time flies by? Doesn’t it seem like it was just yesterday you were sitting at your desk, watching the hand of the clock slowly tick, daydreaming about the many adventures the electric days of summer had in store for you? For some of us, it’s been years since we’ve been able to partake in the romantic lull of summer months, the easy freedom from daily work but for some, it was just yesterday.

Before we clean out our desks, sign our yearbooks and replace homework with BBQ’s, let’s take a few moments to let our teachers know just how much they are appreciated; a bushel of flowers from a neighbor’s yard, a gift card to a local cafe, a wacky photo to remind them of their favorite student or even a simple, heart-felt card can be the one thing that teacher needs to show that they truly made a difference in someone’s life.

At Therapy, we have always had a soft spot for teachers everywhere, even when they mark us tardy or scold us for blaming the dog for the missing assignments. To show our appreciation for the unbelievably hard work teachers do everyday, Therapy has donated $13,500 to various San Francisco public schools through a wonderful non-profit program, Adopt a Classroom. We’ve been donating to this particular program since 2008 and it’s near and dear to us because of the simple fact that 100% of the donated funds go directly to the teacher and their classrooms.

We chose public schools in the most overlooked and underfunded areas of SF, Hunters Point and the Mission, from elementary schools to high schools; Cleveland and Buena Vista Annex Elementary, Creative Arts Charter School, as well as Balboa and Mission High Schools. Our donations will reach over 1,400 students in 17 classrooms ranging from science to creative arts to language development. Here are just a couple of testimonies from the teachers we donated to:

"I use my Mac Book Pro to plan lessons, update school loop, and project related videos and images in the classroom. I depend on it to do my job well. Last night, my car window was smashed at home and my laptop was stolen. I cannot afford to replace it, but I am devastated because I really need it. I would be very grateful if someone could help me to replace it.” Mary Maher, math teacher at Mission High School.

“I am a fourth grade bilingual teacher with 32 students. At the moment my school is battling through the economic crisis and is losing money for basic supplies like expo markers, art supplies, binders, folders, books, etc. We are limited to the amount of materials we can purchase and if we run out, then we run out. Most of my students come from low income households and find it difficult to bring in these items. I know it`s a long shot, but a computer in my class would be great as well. We only have 10 computers in my school for 400+ students. If I could have a computer available for my 4th grade students in the classroom, they would greatly benefit.” Antoinette Marquez, Buena Vista Annex Elementary

These stories touched our hearts and we are committed to donating, not just in San Francisco, but throughout the Bay Area. We plan on reaching out to public schools in East Palo Alto, East San Jose, East Oakland and other underprivileged areas. Every community we have been lucky enough to become a part of has always been so welcoming and supportive of our family business and the wonderful people of Pleasanton are no different! We've been chosen through Pleasanton's Weekly Reader's Choice Awards as the 'Best New Retail Business'! Thank you to everyone who voted for us and for all those who have welcomed us into their lives and families.

We are also very happy to announce that Therapy's been accepted into College! 2951 College Avenue, that is, in the wonderful city of Berkeley! We have been wishin' and hopin' for quite some time now that we would have the opportunity to set-up-shop in Berkeley and now that we've been granted admission, we feel like the luckiest (and most grateful) people on earth! We want to extend our deepest thanks to the city of Berkeley and to all of our loyal customers throughout the years that have taken a chance on this Mom 'n Pop organization and helped us thrive when all odds were against it. When we opened our first location in the Mission 17 years ago this May, the owner, Jing C., was three months pregnant and equipped with just a few bucks and an unrelenting desire to create a store where people can go, not only to find somethingworth buying, but to find a friendly face to talk to and a place where relationships can be made. Now here we are, becoming teenagers along with their daughter, in an area as communal as it is majestic and the place we call home: the Bay Area.

And it's one thing to say thank you but it's another to actually give thanks; with our good fortune comes the greater ability to give back to the very communities that have helped us establish ourselves as a company. Not only are we in a fortunate position to give monetarily we are also able to donate our time and personal resources to various food banks and charities that are in desperate need of help. We have started a support staff compiled of some of the lovely people from each Therapy location who will volunteer at certain non-profits, like the medical research walks, throughout the Bay Area because a helping hand is sometimes needed more than any amount we can donate.

So far this year we will be participating in three 'walks' that will be held in San Francisco this summer and for each non-profit we will be donating $5,000. Last year's AIDS Walk was such a life changing experience for us that we will be attending again when the walk happens on July 15th in Golden Gate Park. Want to walk with Team Therapy? Last but not least, we will be donating to the Out of the Darkness Overnight Walk which supports the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, the leader in funding research, education, survivor and awareness programs - both to prevent suicide and to assist those affected by suicide. This is an overlooked epidemic in our country so help us shine a light within the darkness by going to their website to donate or sign up to walk.

Mother's Day.

It's that wonderful time of the year where good ol' Mom gets the special day she deserves so why not treat her to a night out on the town? Mothers are the universal symbol for endless love and affection and it's our job to make sure that at least one night out of the year she gets the royal treatment. So instead of the typical chocolates and flowers, we've come up with a variety of restaurants throughout the Bay Area that we think are Mother-worthy.

Berkeley

Summer Kitchen is a quaint restaurant stocked by local farms and ran by eco-conscious chefs and owners. The menu is chock-full of classic Americana meals and desserts that will transport you to a time and place almost forgotten. It's casual dining made with a whole lot of love.

Elmwood Cafe is not only a well-known and respected family establishment, it's a small bit of history that sits on a corner lot in Berkley. The cafe itself was designed by famed architect John A. Bischoff and was originally a soda fountain shop in the early '20's and most of the interior of the cafe is from the original space. They make their soda in-house, along with their famous baked goods and coffee. Mom will appreciate the small-town ambiance so much so that she'll half-expect there to be a Bailey's Building and Loan right across the street.

San Francisco

Taqueria Los Coyotes in the Mission is authentic Mexican food at its best. At very reasonable prices, the menu is so vast that you'll be tempted to try dish after dish. And don't forget to treat your mom to a tasty pina colada or, a personal favorite, chavelas.

Tartine. Need we say more? Treat your mom to their world-famous bread and baked goods then take a stroll through Dolores Park.

Picaro specializes in authentic Spanish tapas and sangria, the perfect combination for the well-traveled Mom.

Burlingame

Mingalaba is located right on the main strip in downtown Burlingame and offers a mix of Burmese and Mandarin vegetarian dishes for the food-conscious Mom. After dinner, you can explore all of the different boutiques and shops that make up Burlingame Ave.

Taste In Mediterranean Food is the place to take the whole family, with hefty portions and a wide range of vegetarian and meat platters and items to choose from, everyone will find what they love.

Pleasanton

Nonni's Bistro offers artisan breakfasts and brunches with a European flare. And we all know that mothers love to go to brunch!

Mountain View

Cascal is Spanish tapas in an other-worldy, intimate setting; perfect for new and experienced parents alike for a little romance.

Sushi Tomi, located off of Castro Street, offers a large dinner menu of authentic Sushi and Japanese cuisine.

Los Altos

Los Altos Grill is where you can find slow, fire roasted rotisserie for a good, ol' fashioned meal. Ideal for both a family outing or an intimate dinner.

Sumika offers a seasonal, authentic Japanese menu which includes organic meats and veggies.

Campbell

Blue Line Pizza, sister restaurant to the famous Little Star Pizza in SF, does not disappoint if you've been a customer of the original. From deep-dish to buffalo wings to salads, their menu is designed to please even the pickiest eater. And don't forget to try one of their signature cocktails, like the blue agave margarita.

Love is in the air and with Valentine's Day just a few days away, we can't help but look around us and be thankful for the many kinds of love that surround us on a daily basis; parents and siblings who have made us who we are; friends and lovers who make it easier to be ourselves; sons and daughters, nephews and nieces who show us all of the possibilities that still lie ahead. We can't believe it's already the second month of the year! Springing Forward.

What can we say about 2011 without following it up with a big, grandiose 'Thank You!'? Nothing, really, because we owe our spectacular year to our customers, who are as assiduous in their love for all things Therapy as we are and that's a fantastically rare thing to have as a company. When Therapy first opened its doors way-back-when, we honestly couldn't imagine that we would become the large family we are today, filled with so many wonderful people who make everything worthwhile.

And with that gratitude comes the promise of bright and shiny new things! We will be heading out to several gift shows, as well as clothing markets, in the next couple of weeks which means you'll get to see tons of new stuff from the brands you love! We'll be sure to post on our Facebook when things start to arrive!

Giving Thanks.

No matter how the tradition began, it's what Thanksgiving has become that makes it an extraordinary holiday; a designated day for family and friends to gather at the dinner table and share what it is they are thankful for and to actually give thanks. It has also become a day of great charity, with thousands of Americans choosing to spend this day with those who may not have a dinner table to gather around and provide those who are in need with a warm meal and limitless compassion. It is these charities and selfless acts that have inspired us to help our neighbors in need; Therapy will be donating a total of $5,000 to four local charities: Larkin Street Youth in San Francisco, the Ecumenical Hunger Program of East Palo Alto, Family Supportive Housing in San Jose and the East Oakland Community Project. The Giving of Warmth.

Clothing as always been one of the most honest ways to express yourself, so of course the one item that covers all of that up can be considered the most revealing of them all. From fancy to everyday, heavy to light, we have coats galore for every type of person and weather forecast. Not only do they serve a very necessary function, they can also tell a story. We carry jackets from family-owned companies that were started at the turn of the century; some of our coats are produced by the same company who clothe the men and women who serve to protect our nation in the fire and police departments; some are inspired by cultures across the Atlantic. So stop into Therapy to discover that covering up can be the most fun.

With that said, we can't forget about our neighbors, no matter where they happen to be. Being a community and family-centered company, we do what we can to help those in need and recently the small rural town of Gilboa, New York (a place very dear to our hearts) was completely demolished by floods caused by Hurricane Irene only to leave many families homeless and in need of the basics of life. The surrounding towns of Bleiham, Middleburgh and Schoharie were devastated by this flood as well and there is only one school that serves this entire rural area, Gilboa-Conesville School, leaving it in desperate need of funding and clothing for the children affected by this natural disaster.

There really is no other answer than 'yes' when asked to help a child and we here at Therapy are in a very fortunate position to help the families of Gilboa by donating $10,000 to the Rebuild Gilboa Fund. That money will be going to the children of that area, grades K-12, most of whom survived with just the clothes on their back and now with the colder months arriving, they are in desperate need of warmer clothing.

On Being Grateful...

There are only a handful of experiences a person can count as life-changing and we have to say that participating in this year's AIDS Walk in our beloved San Francisco was definitely one of those moments. The swelling energy of the crowds (an estimated 25,000 people in nearly 1,000 teams) was palpable; every age of every race of every background could be found in Golden Gate Park marching together for a singular purpose and honestly, it's hard to find something more beautiful than that. This year's walk raised $3,011,245 and Therapy is very proud to say that we were able to contribute $5,000 in the fight to find a cure. And because of the undeniable good this charity does, Therapy will participate in next year's SF AIDS Walk and we are calling on all Therapy-enthusiasts (or lovers of humanity or both!) throughout the Bay Area, or wherever you may reside, to join us at Golden Gate Park next year so that you, too, can experience this electrifying event!

July has been a month heavy with good tidings, and in turn, with gratitude. Not only were we lucky enough to be part of the AIDS Walk, but we were also voted the best boutique in Mountain View by readers of their local newspaper, the Mountain View Voice!! Being loved by our customers is good enough for us, but having it made official really hits the soft spot, leaving us full of pride over the fact that you chose us. So a big thank you to everyone who voted!!! We are truly, truly grateful!

One last thing. It's become rather public news already, but we just want to give another shout out to our new city, Pleasanton! Jewelry is one of the most personal things you can buy for another person, or even yourself, and our newest, hand-made jewelry lines definitely reflect that. As anyone who has ever walked into our store knows, we pride ourselves on carrying products that are as individual as you are, and supporting local/not-so-local independent artisans is the foundation to that philosophy. Our three newest jewelry lines are Plastique, Julie Nolan and Social Graces; these independent, hand-made-by-the-artist lines are the archetype of personal and unique.

The fabulously minimal/modern necklaces and earrings by Plastique are all laser-cut acrylic, designed and assembled by the artist, Jen Murse, in her studio. Exclusive to Therapy only, the artist has created a line of necklaces featuring five different city names (San Jose, Oakland, San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles) hanging from gold chains, made to represent where you're from or, more romantically, where you hope to be.

A San Jose native, Julie Nolan has made her mark on the jewelry scene with her antique-inspired pieces. One of the reasons why her line is oh-so-special is the exclusivity of owning a Julie Nolan astrology necklace; we are one of two stores who carry her line in the entire state of California. Now a resident of the great state of New York, Nolan creates these hand-made brass necklaces in her studio, drawing the astrological design from a turn-of-the-century Swiss calendar, marking the brightest star in each constellation with larger holes. Each necklace is hand stamped by Nolan with the first three initials of the sign. It's debatable whether or not astrology is a science, but there's no argument that these necklaces are art.

Being a family-owned business, we understand the importance of striving to better serve our communities. With it being the month of love and all, how could we pass up the opportunity to participate in the wonderful not-for-profit organization, The Princess Project? Our store in the Mission District of San Francisco (545 Valencia St.) will be serving as a drop-off point for those wanting to donate new or newly-new dresses in excellent condition (and, really, who wouldn't want to unload that bridesmaid's dress or that I-only-wore-it-once evening dress that has been taking WAY too much room in your already cramped closet?) . For those who haven't heard, The Princess Project is a Bay Area organization that gives high school girls who are financially unable to buy their prom dresses the chance to peruse through donated dresses and accessories, making sure that they don't miss out on the very special high school dance. Whether your experience was good or bad, having the ability to look back on your prom and reminisce on the awkward dancing or the bad finger-foods is something every girl should have. It's the end of the first week of the new year and we're already engulfed with anticipation to see what's in store for us in the approaching months. The new year is also a time of reflection, filled with humbling realizations that help you to look forward with hope and promise at what lies ahead. Last year was such an exciting year for us, opening a brand new store in Los Altos and reopening our Burlingame store in the heart of downtown, that we can't help but reflect on how thankful we are to have such devoted and fantastic people who come in to each and every store. I know we've said this before but, honestly, it can't be said enough: we are the most grateful company in the world because we have customers like you. With so many designers and brand names flooding clothing racks across the country, it can be hard to find something with a genuine history and an established quality. Since 1904, Spiewak has solidified itself as the best of the best when it comes to jackets and outerwear. We cannot contain our excitement any longer - we must shout it out at the top of our lungs, on the highest possible mountain peak: WE'RE MOVING! Well, only one of our six locations is in the process of packing their bags, but they won't be taking too long of a journey: the Burlingame store will find it's new home right smack in the middle of downtown on Burlingame Ave., right next to American Apparel. We find ourselves giddy over this new prospect and adventure, and we only hope that our extremely wonderful and devoted customers will celebrate in the merriment with us this October when we open our doors on Burlingame Ave. The unveiling of this new, bigger store will be a site to behold, so keep yourself glued to our blog for more details of this splendid event!

Therapy Adopts a Classroom

Have you ever thought about adopting a classroom? Adopt-A-Classroom is a non-profit organization that directs 100% of all donations to the classroom teacher. The teacher is given full discretion to "purchase resources that meet the student needs and increase opportunity for classroom success." In 2009, Therapy donated a total of $6,800.00 to community classrooms--giving teachers the chance to purchase WWII books for 8th grade research papers, educational DVD's encouraging "learning by doing," and prisms for better understanding wavelength and frequency of light.

Through this program, our Adopt-A-Classroom teachers are able to send Therapy updates on purchases made with the donated amounts! Here is a note from one of our teachers:

"As we leave for the winter break, I realized how low I was on some supplies in the classroom. Knowing that I'll have new dry erase markers waiting for me when I get back is great! You never can have enough of them. Also, the binders and page protectors will help organize the business ads and promotion messages for this year's yearbook. Again, thank you for your generous support!"
